61st Restorative Justice Class at LCC

On May 8th and 10th, the Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 61st Lincoln Correctional Center (Restrictive Housing C-Unit) “Restorative Justice - Victims Impact/Empathy (Life Skills) Class”. Eighty percent of class participants rated the class excellent, with eighty three percent showing some level of empathy and/or insight in the effects their actions on their victims/community. Of the class, one participant said, “It helps with a lot of issues with identifying the past wreckages and Emotional Hygiene (how to process emotions).”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Food Service Director Jeryl Carey organizes food trays at the Community Corrections Center-Omaha (CCC-O). Carey has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 1998. On June 14, The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its second ninety minute “Anger/Emotional Hygiene Session” at Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). One hundred percent of class participants rated the class excellent, with sixty percent showing some level of empathy and/or insight in the effects their actions on their victims/community. When asked how the session was helpful, two participants said, "Identifying the emotions that come before anger and learning how to cash my $1,000,000 check (emotional hygiene), and "It helped me understand that anger is a secondary emotion.”Read more

The Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) hosted an employee appreciation meal for the entire facility on May 25. Lieutenant Kinney smoked chicken and pork for sandwiches, which were served along with baked beans, coleslaw, cookies, chips and water. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Food Service Specialist Maria Casalins takes inventory of food service items in the kitchen at the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L). Casalins has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2016. Her main job duties include supervising individuals assigned to the kitchen, conducting inventory of food service items and serving meals. “I love being able to work in the kitchen and provide a service to the individuals,” Casalins said. #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlight

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Facility Maintenance Specialist Jeremiah Barns fixes a door at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). Barns has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2004. As a certified locksmith, Barns’ duties include ensuring all locks and doors are working properly and completed general maintenance throughout the facility. “I enjoy this work because I get to work with my hands and problem solve,” Barns said. “It’s important for the day-to-day operations of the facility and I enjoy the people I work with.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlightRead more

On June 16, at the Correctional Peace Officer Foundation (CPOF) PROJECT 2000 XXIX in Houston, TX, members of the NDCS Honor Guard were presented a Lifetime Sponsorship plaque for the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). During the event, NDCS Honor Guard team presented another donation of $5,000.00 to the CPOF for Lifetime Sponsorship on behalf of the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) in honor of Warden Fred Britten. This plaque will be presented at PROJECT 2000 XXX in Louisville, KY on Saturday June 8, 2019.
