Families and close friends gathered at the Nebraska State Penitentiary on April 12th and April 19th, 2019 to strengthen bonds and spend quality time with their incarcerated loved ones.

These visits were unique from a typical visit to the Penitentiary because they were Family Fun Days. These special days occur a few times a year for incarcerated individuals to deeper connect with their loved ones... and to have a little bit of fun with them too!

Considering 93 percent of incarcerated individuals will make the transition back to the community, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) programming that helps them become successful outside is essential. In order to hold programming, NDCS needs volunteers.

“Volunteers provide a unique means to assist with each individual’s success,” said Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) Warder Taggert Boyd at the annual LCC Volunteer Banquet. “Incarcerated individuals tend to cherish volunteer-led programs and have better participation rates,” said Boyd.

A huge milestone was reached by 14 ladies at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) on April 17th, 2019. Business coaches, family, staff, and members of the Parole Board all cheered and celebrated the 14 incarcerated women's completion of the RISE program.

RISE, an organization that advocates for successful reentry for incarcerated individuals, has an innovative program that focuses on character development, job readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Program graduates receive a Certificate in Career Readiness from the University of Nebraska Omaha's School of Business Administration.

Congratulations to the 18 men who graduated from the Nebraska State Penitentiary School on May 6th, 2019. Graduates encompassed men who either completed GEDs or finished their high school curriculum while incarcerated. Each graduate overcame numerous barriers on their unique journey towards completion.

Chandra Davis is a new recruit who’s beginning her career with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC). She comes from a human resources and recruiting background. NDCS's new teammate graduated with Class 419 on April 29th and says she’s ready to start serving her community.

“I was looking for a challenge,” said Corporal Chandra Davis.

The NDCS Honor Guard hosted a four-person golf scramble fundraiser on Saturday, May 4th. Participants played five hours of golf and enjoyed some good food. Several local businesses including the Escape Room, Village Inn, Runza, Valentino’s, Black Hills Energy, Dairy Queen, Subway, and Casey’s donated prizes for the top three teams. Crisis negotiation can be emotional, time sensitive and stressful. It’s a skill that takes patience, empathy and fast-thinking. After nine days of intense training, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Crisis Negotiating Team (CNT) graduated 15 NDCS corrections officers, five Nebraska State Patrol troopers and five Douglas County Corrections officers in a ceremony at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) in April, 2019.

When Amber Drake decided to put her teaching career on hold to move closer to home in 2009, she was excited to work side-by-side with her “little” brother, Lieutenant James Franzen, at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI).

Working with family has been an amazing experience for Drake – having someone to learn from, someone to share and reflect with. Next week she looks forward to celebrating with Lt. Franzen as he is awarded Supervisor of the Year for Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC).
