NDCS Honor Guard Receives Award from Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska

The ladies of the NDCS Honor Guard received a big award this month!

For the last two years, this group has been inspiring and teaching Nebraska's Girl Scouts about self defense, careers in corrections, and Honor Guard practices.

This group was awarded the Spirit of Nebraska Community Benefactor Award this month at the Girl Scouts Award Ceremony!

Blues Behind Bars performs at TSCI

Incarcerated individuals gathered around the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution for a Christian Blues concert on Saturday, April 13th, 2019.

Blues Behind Bars is an outreach program that has brought professional quality blues music and a Christian message to the prison populations since 2009.

The volunteer performers are active participants in the Colorado Correctional System but made the trip to Tecumseh to lift the spirits of incarcerated individuals in attendance.

Blues Behind Bars gave two full concert performances at TSCI.

There is a moment inside Peggy Jones’ creative writing class when the class becomes a bit less about the mechanics of good writing and more about the razor wire behind which her students live.

It happens near the end of Monday night’s session, the finale of the spring semester. The students clear their throats and one after another read their final stories to the room. Volunteer Teaches Strength and Conditioning at NCYF

Eight months ago, fitness trainer Tim (TC) Collins was approached by the owner of Body Masters Fitness where he works, to take over a contract at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) teaching a Strength and Conditioning course. At the time Collins wasn’t sure what he was getting into, or if he had the time to commit. Today, he looks forward to the time he spends with the young men and the rewards he gets out of it.

LCC hosts motivational speaker Kevin Kush

On March 28, 2019, The Lincoln Correctional Center hosted motivational speaker Kevin Kush who delivered a powerful presentation on the “Doors of Opportunity” to a gymnasium full of both incarcerated individuals and staff.

Kush identified the steps to getting opportunities to present themselves and how to go for those opportunities.

"It’s up to you to take advantage of the opportunities presented to you and to look for those open doors" Kush told those in attendance.
