IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Human Resource Manager RT Cabardo calls an applicant to offer employment with the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). Cabardo has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2009. His main duties include supervising and handling all human resource matters for the three NDCS institutions in Omaha. The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) held a Native American Freedom Run on July 18. The Freedom Run is an adaptation of the Sacred Hoop Run that takes place every year in South Dakota. It is done to bring awareness not only to the Native American race, but the hardships they endure, as well as traumatic experiences including suicide and other mental health issues. At the beginning of the event, participants burn sage and breath it in in order to cleanse the body and begin the healing process. The August 20 Defy Ventures graduation at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) marked the largest Defy graduating class in Nebraska and the class with the highest retention in the state thus far. "Competition was fierce and housing unit one did not disappoint," Club Coordinator Amber (Gigstad) Lutjemeyer said. "I am super proud of this group and look forward to them continuing to grow as entrepreneurs, as well as men."Read more

Approximately 50 incarcerated men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) recently watched a livestream of speakers from the Global Leadership Summit. "It's an opportunity for the guys to hear from world class leaders," Religious Coordinator Randy Bartelt said. "It's educational; it calls them to a better place, to be better people." Speakers from the conference outside of Chicago were livestreamed across the world on Aug. 9 and 10. According to the Global Leadership Summit's website, there were approximately 445,000 people watching both in person and via the livestream.Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) has had an opening for a Recreation Specialist. To ensure the vital functions of this job still get completed, team members have been stepping up and volunteering to do extra duties. Warden Taggart Boyd (7 months), Captain Darin Wilkison (20 years), LCC Recreation Manager Kevin Oliver (21 years), and LCC/DEC Safety/Sanitation Specialist Jeff Salomons (28 years) lent a helping hand by loading up soda and bringing it into the facility.
