The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 76 th Restorative Justice Intervention (RJI) “Crime Victims Impact/Empathy" class at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) in December. Seventy-five percent of those who took part rated the class as excellent.

One of the participants remarked, “This workshop really helped me clarify the impact my crime had on everything. Family, friends and the public.” Another participant said that by taking part “you see how you hurt everyone, not just one person.”

Reconnect Graduates

Two incarcerated men at NCYF successfully completed the Reconnect How to Succeed: Construction Series on October 22, 2018. Pictured are both graduates along with Reconnect Volunteer Shakur Abdullah. Reconnect is a grant partner that provides job services for felons while incarcerated and after release.Read more

Water Walkers is an inmate-led support group at NCCW that was created by inmates and is facilitated by Sergeant Davis and Warden Davidson. The group seeks to help inmates with a challenging past to see the possibility of new, positive beginnings. Water Walkers is a spiritual group that is welcoming to all who wish to participate.

The group recently held an all-day retreat that allowed the thirty women who participated to give back to the NCCW community by connecting with one another spiritually and intellectually. Jan and Randy Bretz, TedX Lincoln keynote speakers, were honored guests.

Incarcerated individuals at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) submitted original artwork to be considered for murals in the Restrictive Housing Unit holding cell with the goal of creating a more calming environment. One winner was selected by staff and will have the opportunity to paint their murals on two 7' x 10' walls.Read more

The TSCI General Population Veterans Club held their annual banquet on Tuesday, November 27. The banquet was in honor of Veterans Day.

The evening was dedicated to Major Brent Taylor who died on November 3rd, serving his country in Kabul, Afghanistan. He leaves behind his wife and seven children of Ogden, Utah.

The room was brightly decorated in patriotic colors of red, white, and blue. Each branch of service was represented by their flag. The highlight of the evening was the ceremony honoring the “Fallen Soldiers.”

The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 24th Restorative Justice Intervention “Crime Victims Impact/Empathy (Life Skills) Class” at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) in December. Eighty-six percent of class participants rated the class as excellent.

One participant said of the class, “It gave me insights, solutions on how to deal with my problems better without using drugs or committing crimes.” Another participant said of what he learned, “I hurt a lot more than I thought. I learned I am important and can fix myself.”
