Inmates from the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) had an opportunity to participate in the Catholic Charities Microbusiness Class.

Throughout the course of the class, these young men were taught about how to become an entrepreneur.

Volunteer Logan Lee taught the students about finances, taxes, OSHA, employee management, and business planning.

Nine women graduated from the Peer Support Program at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). The program requires six months of instruction and another six months of evaluation. These women have demonstrated an ability to provide much-needed support, guidance, and mentoring to people who need it most. In addition, they will speak to all new arrivals about NCCW's culture and community expectations.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Unit Caseworker (UCW) Alex Roth conducts a count in his housing unit. UCW Roth began his career at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) and has been with NDCS since June 2015. Today he is working out of the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) and is taking on extra duties as a facilitator for Thinking for a Change (T4C), a cognitive behavioral change program.

UCW Roth says he enjoys helping inmates better their lives, improving their skill set, and making sure they have the right tools to succeed upon their release.Read more

Over 200 inmates took the opportunity to make cards for loved ones. The Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) has a multitude of talented artists and they were able to put their talents to good work. The cards were sent out to friends and family during the holidays.

On December 11, 2018, the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) held its 4th quarter Staff Recognition Ceremony. Officer Brian Waldecker was awarded the Employee of the quarter. Sgt. Justin Spackman was awarded the annual 'Making a Difference' award. First Plymouth Choir performed at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) religious center on December 17, 2018. The 40+ member choir performed twice, which allowed for approximately 150 inmates to attend. A big thank you to First Plymouth Choir from everyone at NDCS!Read more

Eight ladies from the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) completed the EMPWR class presented by Ruth Karlsson's Release and Restore program.

EMPWR showed these women that they do not have to be defined by their crime. They learned how to improve their self-image, how to reduce negative effects from both physical and cognitive triggers, and discovered many other self-improvement techniques that will help them become valuable contributors to the community. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Community Correctional Center of Omaha (CCC-O) Sergeant Elliot Schmit begins his day ensuring that all facility keys are accounted for.

Elliot has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2016. Although supervision of staff and inmates are his main duties, Elliot has numerous other lateral duties and responsibilities at CCC-O.
