On May 14, Nebraska State Penitentiary School (NSP), held its bi-annual graduation ceremony in the NSP visiting room. Graduation ceremonies are held each May and November to celebrate those individuals who have earned their High School Diploma or GED. There were thirteen graduates recognized and they were able to invite five guests to share this special ceremony with them. After the program, graduates and guests, as well as staff, enjoyed cookies and drinks supplied by the NSP Kitchen staff. On April 14, Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) in partner with Prison Fellowship hosted the “Prison Fellowship Hope Event". During this event, a basketball game, music instrument workshop with the band 513FREE, lunch from Chick-fil-A, and a panel discussion with Nicole Foster and Elvin Torres were held. In addition, Jarrell Roach from Youth for Christ served as comedian as well as the emcee during the concert with Christian band 513FREE.Read more

On May 2, team members at the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) in McCook, NE hosted a reentry fair for incarcerated individuals preparing to return to the community. Several agencies from across Nebraska were represented including colleges, housing programs, and employment services. In attendance at the event were 126 men who had the opportunity to meet service providers and learn more about opportunities available to them in the community.Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Central Control Corporal Charlene Preuit answers a phone at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). Preuit has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2014. Her main duties include checking out keys and radios, moving people through central control and taking phone calls. Preuit also teaches Thinking for a Change (T4C). “After working here for a while, I started to realize that the more I do, the more of a difference I can make in some of these girls’ lives,” Preuit said. #NDCSTEamMemberSpotlight

On April 30, Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) celebrated its second K9 graduation. Six Handlers received certificates of completion and two Handlers became certified trainers. TSCI Handlers have found a great sense of accomplishment and passion for this program. One Handler stated during graduation the K9 program is “the first and only program he has participated in during his 30 years of incarceration”. Canines Evie and Rusty have moved on to assist community members in their trained abilities, and Handlers are still working with Gus to continue to develop and train him until he starts the Service Program at the...Read more

Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) hosted the Brothers in Blue Seminar April 19-22. The Brothers in Blue Seminar is a faith-based life skills seminar in which sixteen volunteers graciously gave of their time and made a positive impact on fourteen incarcerated individuals.Read more
