The choir from First Plymouth Congregational Church recently performed a concert at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Religious Coordinator Tim Kramer said the music was sterling, the room was full of genuine smiles and everyone involved was overflowing with compassion. Team members at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) got in the holiday spirit with a facility-wide party on Dec. 12. Those who attended the party enjoyed food from Ricky's Catering in Hanover, Kan. The Employee Activities Committee (EAC) provided gift baskets and the Wellness Committee brought hot chocolate, punch and M&M's. Each team member also received a koozie and a $10 gift card to Casey's General Store.Read more

The Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) hosted an Inner Circle/Winner Circle program on Dec. 2. Two individuals who were formerly incarcerated at NCYF came in to speak with the current population. One of the speakers is now on work release at the Community Corrections Center-Omaha (CCC-O), while the other is on parole. The goal of Inner Circle/Winner Circle is to have individuals share their journey through the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) system with those at NCYF. The individuals speak about steps they've taken and are currently taking to prepare themselves for release.Read more

Incarcerated individuals at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) graduated from Thinking For a Change (T4C) on Nov. 5. Unit Manager Rowan Taylor and Sergeant Matthew Reisdorff facilitated the class.Read more

The Community Justice Center completed its 53rd Restorative Justice – Victims Impact/Empathy (Life Skills) class at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) on Dec. 6 and 7. Seventy-five percent of participants rated the class as excellent. "I learned to be remorseful and see victims other than myself and feel for that person," one participant said. "I'm able to define my problems and process my emotions."Read more

Each NDCS prison holds regular meetings of their Employee Positive Impact Council (EPIC). Today, Director Frakes held an agency-level meeting with representatives from each facility in attendance. The group engaged in dialogue on subjects such as communication, employee engagement and improving interactions with the incarcerated men and women.Read more
