Today we share an incredible celebration of a teammate who has spent the last 45 years dedicating her time and talent to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. And a lot has changed in the world during those 45 years!

Karen Michaelson, HR specialist manager/business partner II, began her NDCS career in 1978, when she joined the agency as a steno clerk at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). At NSP, she was promoted to typist II, secretary I and secretary II. This month the Native Americans Spiritual and Cultural Awareness Group (NASCA) held its annual Powwow at the Omaha Correctional Center. NASCA is an avenue for Native Americans to express their cultural and spiritual practices. At the event, club members honored guests from the community with certificates of appreciation for their support of the club. Nearly 200 individuals serve in peer support or facilitation roles at NDCS facilities. They provide support to peers during incarceration and as they prepare for successful reentry to the community. In recognition of their invaluable role in rehabilitation, Governor Jim Pillen has proclaimed October 19 as Peer Support Celebration Day. #PeerSupport #BuildYourFuture

The greatest wealth is health! And today we’re celebrating #WellnessWednesday with some of our awesome teammates from the Reception and Treatment Center (RTC) in Lincoln and the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) in McCook, Nebraska. These teammates pictured shared some laughter and great times outdoors.

Nineteen RTC teammates participated in a disc golf tournament at the Max E. Roper Interstate Park, and WEC teammates hosted a cornhole tailgate on the front lawn of the facility. Way to go teammates for your wellness efforts. #NDCSEvents #HealthyChoices
