Sometimes in order to see a change, you must be the change. In order to create an environment which promotes positive growth and continued recognition of the forward moving behavior, it takes one person to see the possibility and to act on it.

Recently at the Work Ethic Camp (WEC), Corporal Judd did just that.

Judd recognized the need to do more to acknowledge and encourage positive behavior so he created the Plus form, presented the idea and gained approval to implement it. An honor guard assembled from multiple veteran groups gathered on Memorial Day to render military honors, complete with a twenty-one-gun salute, in honor of the veterans buried at Grasshopper Hill.

Grasshopper Hill is a historical cemetery sitting on the Nebraska State Penitentiary grounds and is maintained by incarcerated individuals and NDCS staff. This hill became the resting grounds of incarcerated individuals unclaimed by family and friends between 1874-1960.

Men at the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) have been enjoying the better weather while practicing social distancing this spring. Recently, the men worked to cultivate the annual garden with hopes of a bountiful harvest. It's no secret team members at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) refer to each other as being a part of each other's families. For Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) Shop Operator Margie Hoss and her brother Steve Jordan, that’s exactly what they are. “I really enjoy seeing my brother once in a while at work.”

Hoss has worked for NDCS for nearly 15 years. Jordan has been the plumber at Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) for seven. They both have several people they can call their best friends at work. But Hoss noted having family at work to support you is also extra special and makes her smile.

Staying busy, overcoming challenges and finding variety in her day-to-day routine are three key reasons why Registered Nurse (RN) Ina Thiel loves her work in corrections. She’s dedicated her career to assisting and treating the incarcerated population with nearly 19 years in corrections, eight-and-a-half of them working at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). “Inmates are people who have made bad choices and we as teammates have the opportunity to educate them to become a part of our communities.”
