A big congratulations to these guys for graduating from the Thinking for a Change (T4C) program at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution. Developed by the National Institute of Corrections, T4C is a high-level cognitive behavioral program that utilizes role playing to help participants address attitudes, behavior, family, friends and change criminogenic thinking. These men have mastered the skills they’ve learned during their time in T4C.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services has joined a distinguished list of correctional systems and programs across the United States, as the most recent recipient of the Lucy Webb Hayes award. NDCS Director Scott R. Frakes accepted the award this month at the national conference of the American Correctional Association (ACA) in Nashville, Tennessee.

The award is named in honor of Lucy Hayes, wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes. President Hayes served as the ACA’s first president in 1870, when the organization was founded, and again from 1883 to 1892. His wife Lucy is credited with influencing his interest in...Read more

Congratulations to these 16 women for graduating from the Intentional Peer Support (IPS) program through a partnership with the Mental Health Association of Nebraska at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women. IPS helps individuals recover from mental illness, addiction or trauma with the assistance of someone who has similar life experiences.

After the graduation ceremony concluded, the women celebrated with a BBQ-catered lunch.

NDCS Team Member Spotlight:

Needing a change of pace in his life and having the skills to work well with people, Michael Cacy decided to apply for a corporal (Cpl.) position at the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) located in McCook, NE. Four years later, Cpl. Cacy is loving every moment being around people and helping to change lives.

“I enjoy the interaction with the incarcerated population,” said Cpl. Cacy. "I’m interacting with everyone because I enjoy people.”

Cpl. Cacy believes that WEC provides a great opportunity for the men at the facility to succeed through education, programming and job skills.

Corporal Claude Kimpakala was selected as a recipient of the 2020 Employee of the Year Award for the Operations Division at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Kimpakala consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic, continually going above and beyond to ensure that the NSP team is successful. In the past year, he has shown exceptional teamwork and his positive attitude and dedication are a great example to new and veteran staff alike.

Case Manager Michael McCann was awarded Supervisor of the Quarter, Caseworker Desiree Wordlaw was named Employee of the Quarter and Case Manager Jacob Medley was recognized for five years of service with the department.
