Young men at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility enjoyed using their creativity to make some fantastic fall decorations to share with their families, staff and the community. Seventeen individuals participated in the pumpkin painting activity and could choose to send their pumpkins home with their families, place in the staff offices or donate to Open Door Mission. The history of an organization has direct bearing on its future. It serves as the basis for the company’s culture and provides a benchmark for progress. While NDCS has maintained a timeline of events on its website, a process improvement project was undertaken to make the historical record more robust. As part of that process, stakeholders were interviewed who had long-standing knowledge of the department. Among her teammates, Caseworker Jennifer Johns is known for her stability, consistency and initiative. She holds herself to a high standard of performance and is always looking for ways to streamline processes.

Johns was selected as the Employee of the Month at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC). She uses her experience and excellent rapport with teammates throughout the facility to solve problems and create a cohesive working environment.

Administrative Assistant Rebecca Renken was a recipient of the Innovation Award at the NDCS Annual Awards. Renken was instrumental in creating and training team members to use the online visiting reservation system. She is proficient in all Microsoft Office software and is always eager to teach others. Process improvement projects often offer a new way of looking at things – not just in terms of how something works, but also in how people operate. Recently, senior NDCS leaders and support staff gathered to talk about duties assigned to administrative assistants. The process included identifying specific functions and the person best assigned to handle them as well as defining regular tasks versus special projects.
