Walking across the stage and receiving their diplomas surrounded by family – it’s a moment these women will never forget.

Ten women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) graduated this month with an associate degree from York University. This group marked the second cohort to complete the Second Chance Educational Program, a partnership between York University and NCCW. The students completed two courses each trimester with York University instructors who set up classrooms at NCCW.

As nurses across the country are recognized this week for #NationalNursesWeek, NDCS is saying a special “thank you” to our nurses! We’re grateful for the wonderful correctional nurses who go above and beyond to display the NDCS values of integrity, respect, compassion, growth and excellence. They pull together and work as a team despite any challenges they face.

George Washington Carver penned these words in an 1896 letter to Booker T. Washington, and they apply perfectly to the work of our NDCS education professionals!

While the pathway to reentry is unique for each incarcerated individual, many pathways find a foundation within the education department – whether through attainment of a high school diploma, completion of a GED, enrollment in workforce readiness courses, or even the journey through post-secondary opportunities.

It’s #CorrectionsMonth and today we’re shining a spotlight on some of our outstanding NDCS teammates.

Corporal (Cpl.) Clark was selected at the April Employee of the Month at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). She is a driven teammate who takes initiative in her work and collaborates well with her teammates.

Unit Manager Henning was recognized as the NSP Supervisor of the Quarter. Henning’s nominator for this award commended her for creating an environment where her team members enjoy coming to work and feel appreciated.

Corporal (Cpl.) Jones is inclusive and solution focused in her work. Her teammates and the NCCW population alike notice the care she shows to each person and the positive attitude she brings to each shift. Cpl. Jones was named the NCCW Employee of the Quarter.
