Incarcerated individuals at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) are participating in the Hero’s Journey Prison Writing Project.

The Hero’s Journey Prison Writing Project is a volunteer-based writing program intended to help inmates explore their lives more honestly, reinterpret their motives and behaviors so they might have a more beneficial incarceration and, ultimately, be one of the programs which facilitates their successful transition into society.

This is a 14-week class and this is the third cohort of students in the program. Overall, 17 incarcerated individuals have already completed the course at NSP...Read more

The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its first crime victims impact/empathy/life skills class at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) on March 27. Sixty-three percent of participants showed empathy and/or insight into the effects their actions had on their victims/community. "This was great information on how to realize how many people you actually hurt," one participant said.Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Physician’s Assistant Peggy Antley completes paperwork at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC). Antley has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2012. Her job duties include providing patient care, making diagnoses, prescribing medications and procedures and making medical referrals. “This is a population of people the community is more than willing to forget about,” Antley said. “I just can’t forget about them.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlightRead more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Case Worker Michael Galyen takes a radio call at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Galyen has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2005. His main duties include monitoring population movement, helping porters with housekeeping plans and managing case files. “I think it’s important because in two to three years we’re going to see these guys out,” Galyen said. “We want to see them successful.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlightRead more

Twelve women graduated from the Prison Fellowship Academy (PFA) at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) on April 10. This was the first women's PFA graduation in the country. "You guys are truly making a difference now and you will continue to make a difference throughout your entire lives," Warden Denise Davidson told graduates at the ceremony. Audience members included PFA and NDCS executives, volunteers who helped teach PFA classes and prospective students for the next class. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Corporal Lucinda Holmes answers phone calls regarding questions about visiting hours at the Diagnostic Evaluation Center (DEC). Holmes has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) for 11 years.
