IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Administrative Assistant and Public Information Officer Lori Keller responds to emails at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). Keller has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since May 2017. Her main job duties include organizing facility programming, scheduling teammates, facilitating Vocational and Life Skills (VLS) grantee classes and coordinating public information and media visits. “I like it because it’s an opportunity to help people,” Keller said. “I do a lot of things, but the programming is a way to help the ladies not reoffend. The northwest section of McCook, Neb. was evacuated due to a quickly moving grass fire on March 6. The Work Ethic Camp (WEC) was in the direct path of the fire, which originated about a quarter of a mile directly north of the facility. While close, the fire did not impact the facility. WEC team members and incarcerated individuals were not in danger. “Thankfully we did not have to evacuate,” WEC Warden Pam Morello said. “It was closer than any of us would have liked. Students from Creighton University’s philosophy department have been visiting incarcerated youth at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) to discuss moral philosophy. During their sessions, students individually met with NCYF youth and discussed questions including: What is forgiveness? What acts can be forgiven? What is trust? If you could teach everyone in the world one idea, what idea would have the biggest positive impact on humanity? Inner Circle core members at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) hosted Don Nevins from the Lincoln Parole Office, Jeffrey Beran from the Omaha Parole Office, and Rafael Hernandez with the Reentry Team to present to a group of approximately 25 incarcerated men on Feb. 21. The speakers presented on the parole process and opportunities available to people transitioning through community corrections and work release. The second Alpha class at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) graduated on Feb. 13. Alpha is a 12-week self-help course based on Biblical concepts. Each class consists of three volunteers, approximately four core members (graduates of the program) and about twenty participants. The program utilizes a meal to show the equality of each individual, various videos on the subject of each lesson, a lecture by a volunteer and then small group discussion. Midway through the course, there is Day of Reflection. The class ends with a graduation and meet and greet for the new class. Congratulations, Alpha grads!Read more

Eric Johnson, Vice President of the Center for Enterprise at Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Neb., and speaker with the Mid-America Speaker’s Bureau, presented a heartwarming message to incarcerated individuals at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) on Feb. 23. Johnson’s message focused on priorities. He told the women listening that priorities are for your life what GPS is in a car: they chart the course to get us where we’re going. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Food Service Manager Mike Coffiel serves lunch at the Community Corrections Center-Omaha. Coffiel has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NCDS) since 2008. His main job duties include serving approximately 510 meals through the on-site kitchen and 60 sack lunches for individuals on work release each day. Coffiel supervises two food service specialists and over 20 incarcerated individuals. “I enjoy doing what I do,” Coffiel said. “I also enjoy teaching the population aspects of food service to help them with possible employment once they get to work release.” #NDCSTeamMemberSpotlightRead more
