Phillip Keys is working to turn his life around. Programs offered at each Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) facility strive to help Keys and others like him. Through a Vocational Life Skills (VLS) grant funded by NDCS, the Center for People in Need offers a program called the Tackling Recidivism and Developing Employability (TRADE). TRADE is designed to assist people returning to society from an incarceration facility up to 18 months from release, persons currently incarcerated, and on parole.

The Work Ethic Camp‘s (WEC) Employee Appreciation Committee (EAC) provided a gift to all WEC team members during the month of May. The WEC EAC wanted to thank each of the 96 teammates for their hard work and service to NDCS.

It was the committee’s intent to provide something that represented WEC and personal enough for teammates to appreciate. They selected pins depicting the correctional officer’s flag along with a note that emphasized how, “Every piece of the puzzle is needed to make this department what it is. Each piece is equally as important and valued!”

The 2019 Annual Correctional Peace Officers Memorial was held in Louisville, KY. Members of the NDCS Honor Guard team accepted a lifetime membership award in recognition for the $5000 donation they made last year. This year’s award goes to the Lincoln Correctional Center in memory of Warden Fred Britten. The honor guard team is proud to announce that because of the staff support with the online shirt sales, golf scrambles, pancake feeds, and several restaurant fundraisers, they were able to donate another $5000 this year. Lt. James Franzen from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) received the 2019 Supervisors/Managers of the Year award. His dedication to NDCS is strong as he’s been with the agency for more than 13 years.

“I was extremely excited and felt appreciated for the hard work I’ve been doing all of these years,” said Franzen.

YORK — As the first cohort in the Second Chance Education Program at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) prepares to graduate, the next cohort is gearing up to start its journey.

Twelve students have spent the last three years working toward an associate’s degree from York College, offered through on-site instruction at NCCW. It is the only such program in the state. One student was released prior to finishing her degree, but the other 11 are set to graduate in August.

Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) partnered with the Nebraska Safety Council to offer a training course on the proper handling and storage of hazardous materials.

The full day of training provided important skills to incarcerated individuals about working safely with various materials they may encounter – including chemicals, paint and cleaning products.
