Corporal (Cpl.) Dillon Kortum was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Employee of the Year Award for the Operations Division at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Cpl. Kortum consistently demonstrates a high level of teamwork, exceptional organizational skills, strong work ethic and is always looking to accomplish the NDCS mission of keeping people safe. He inspires his peers with his professionalism and his dedication to the team. Cpl. At the Community Correctional Center – Lincoln (CCC-L), Corporal (Cpl.) Catherine Svoboda is using creativity to put a positive spin on life by creating an inspirational positivity board in the women’s housing unit.

The “Flip Flop Your Mindset” board was created as a space for the women to lay out their negative thoughts and then “flip” them into something positive. Each sandal has a negative message written on top and a positive “flip” to the message written on the bottom. The board has a plethora of sandals on it!

Volunteers play a key role in NDCS, giving hundreds of hours each month to positively impact and transform lives today for better communities tomorrow. We have great opportunities available for those who are interested. Once accepted into the Volunteer Services program, you will attend a virtual orientation to gain the skills and knowledge to be a successful volunteer within NDCS. There are three virtual orientations coming up in June:

Monday, June 7, 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

NDCS continues to highlight those teammates who went above and beyond during COVID-19. Each was the recipient of an Excellence in Leadership award. Rhonda Bayne and Diane Poppert were part of the purchasing team recognized for procuring necessary supplies to best serve the agency’s inmate population and staff.

To ensure that all payroll processing operations would remain intact during the pandemic, Karen Michaelson and her team worked from home. She organized and managed those operations, to the benefit of more than 2100 NDCS staff members, who received their compensation and benefits on time.

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While millions of Americans live with a mental illness, NDCS provides many clinical treatment programs focused on mental health to the incarcerated population.

 Approximately 19% of adults in the U.S. suffer from an anxiety disorder. NDCS offers the Anxiety Reduction/Coping with Anxiety programs, which teach anxiety reduction behaviors and increase the ability to function with anxiety.

 Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. NDCS provides Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, which is a program to help suicidal and self-harm behaviors.

We are recognizing two NDCS members for their quick response in saving a woman from choking in the dining hall at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW).

Corporal (Cpl.) Edith Rodriguez was first to respond when the woman started gasping for air and began to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Cpl. Stephanie Williams took over the procedure until the woman stopped choking and was able to breathe again. Afterward, Rodriguez and Williams assessed the woman and offered additional medical care.
