Members of the NDCS Honor Guard were recently in Columbus, Ohio, for the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF) Annual National Memorial Ceremony where they honored the families of fallen correctional staff for 2020. They also presented a $5,000 check to the CPOF for a lifetime membership for the Tecumseh State Correctional Institute. These funds will be used for the Catastrophic Assistance Program, which provides financial support to correctional staff and their families due to catastrophic illness, injury or severe financial hardship.Read more

Congratulations to the women at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women who recently earned their General Educational Development (GED) certificates. With the decision to pursue and complete their GED, many more opportunities will open for them in the future.

NDCS Team Member Spotlight:

Facility Maintenance Specialist Electrician Michael Thomsen was selected as a recipient of the 2020 Warden’s Proficiency Award for the Administrative Services Division at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Beginning his career in June 1981 at NSP, Thomsen efficiently performs skilled electrical work, plumbing, welding, on-call duties and any other work that needs to be completed while demonstrating exceptional troubleshooting skills and a strong work ethic that his teammates look up to and respect.

NDCS Team Member Spotlight:

Corporal (Cpl.) James Kucera was recently awarded a challenge coin because of his attention to detail and his great work ethic at the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L). Cpl. Kucera has worked over two decades with NDCS and is currently supervising outside contractors on the CCC-L renovation project that began last year. His average day consists of escorting contractors, keeping track of tool count and controlling inmate movement in the affected areas.

The event will be held at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln with a shotgun start time at 8:00 a.m. NDCS teammates, family, friends and members of the community are all welcome to play. All proceeds will be donated to the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation, a national, non-profit charitable organization that supports corrections officers and staff members who suffer catastrophic events.

Congratulations to the 10 NDCS team members and seven men from the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP), for graduating from the Thinking for a Change (T4C) Facilitator Training program at NSP. Team members will teach alongside the peer facilitators to provide programming opportunities to the incarcerated population. Peer facilitators are also co-facilitating at the Omaha Correctional Center and the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.
