A strong work ethic with fantastic organizational skills perfectly describes Lieutenant (Lt.) Kory Bourquin at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Lt. Bourquin was awarded the 2020 Proficiency Performance Award for the Operations Division at NSP. He assumed the position of lieutenant in February 2020 and he is responsible for leading engagement and changing the culture at NSP. Lt. Bourquin’s positive attitude, professionalism and team spirit make him an outstanding representative for NSP and NDCS. We commend his efforts and commitment to the Department.

Dr. Harbans Deol receives Excellence in Leadership Award

Dr. Harbans Deol recently received an Excellence in Leadership Award from Governor Ricketts for his work during COVID-19.

Decisions and direction provided by Dr. Deol have enabled NDCS to appropriately manage the virus – keeping teammates, the inmate population and Nebraska citizens healthy and safe. In addition to his focus here, Dr. Deol has also been a voice in managing the coronavirus in correctional settings across the nation.

Process Improvement Coordinators Awarded Green Belts

Congratulations to the newest NDCS Lean Six Sigma Green Belts! Governor Pete Ricketts presented Green Belts to Process Improvement Coordinators Shaun Grantski and Alyssa Payton during the State of Nebraska Center of Operational Excellence (COE) graduation ceremony today. Presentation of Green Belts is a historical tradition of the COE when one of its members achieves this rank. As Green Belts, they will use their Lean Six Sigma knowledge and skills to lead improvement and cost-savings projects within the agency. Well done, Shaun and Alyssa!Read more

TSCI Annual Awards Recipients 2020

Teammates in NDCS strive to bring their best to their jobs – everyday. Jaime Graham, Dylan Rasmussen and Rebecca Edwards were among those recognized for outstanding contributions to the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) during 2020.

Graham has been with the agency since 2019. As a licensed practical nurse, she’s known for being an excellent team player, one who has a calm and patient manner and is an excellent communicator with members of the inmate population. Graham was awarded with the Warden’s Proficiency Performance Award.

There’s nothing like running out of something, just when you need it. During COVID-19, there was a lot of that going around (remember the toilet paper shortage?). Fortunately, NDCS could rely on its purchasing team to ensure that critical supplies were on hand.

A.J. Divis, Kyla Black and Kate Severin were among members of the NDCS purchasing team recognized by Gov. Pete Ricketts with the “Excellence in Leadership” award. Enjoying your job leads you to want to come into work each day. At the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L), that is Unit Manager (UM) Jonathan Watt’s main goal. Watt uses his humble and humorous leadership style to encourage, motivate and remind his teammates that things can be accomplished at work while having fun. As an example, he made his rounds at CCC-L, reminding teammates to take the Q12 Employee Engagement Survey, all while rocking a cat shirt and tie-dye pants. Second Chance Pup Graduation at NSP

May 14, 2021

Graduation day took on a special meaning, with the completion of the most recent dog training class at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. Included in the canine/trainer teams was Hero and Robert Dunkin.

Hero was one of four dogs in the Second Chance Pups program. He was trained in preparation to be placed with the family of fallen Lincoln Police officer Mario Herrera.

Second Chance Pups is a program where otherwise overlooked dogs from local shelters are carefully matched with a volunteer inmate program participants, who train the dogs in basic obedience while providing human socialization and interaction with...Read more
