NDCS continues to highlight those teammates who went above and beyond during COVID-19. Each was the recipient of an Excellence in Leadership award. Rhonda Bayne and Diane Poppert were part of the purchasing team recognized for procuring necessary supplies to best serve the agency’s inmate population and staff.

To ensure that all payroll processing operations would remain intact during the pandemic, Karen Michaelson and her team worked from home. She organized and managed those operations, to the benefit of more than 2100 NDCS staff members, who received their compensation and benefits on time.

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While millions of Americans live with a mental illness, NDCS provides many clinical treatment programs focused on mental health to the incarcerated population.

 Approximately 19% of adults in the U.S. suffer from an anxiety disorder. NDCS offers the Anxiety Reduction/Coping with Anxiety programs, which teach anxiety reduction behaviors and increase the ability to function with anxiety.

 Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. NDCS provides Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, which is a program to help suicidal and self-harm behaviors.

We are recognizing two NDCS members for their quick response in saving a woman from choking in the dining hall at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW).

Corporal (Cpl.) Edith Rodriguez was first to respond when the woman started gasping for air and began to perform the Heimlich maneuver. Cpl. Stephanie Williams took over the procedure until the woman stopped choking and was able to breathe again. Afterward, Rodriguez and Williams assessed the woman and offered additional medical care.

A strong work ethic with fantastic organizational skills perfectly describes Lieutenant (Lt.) Kory Bourquin at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP). Lt. Bourquin was awarded the 2020 Proficiency Performance Award for the Operations Division at NSP. He assumed the position of lieutenant in February 2020 and he is responsible for leading engagement and changing the culture at NSP. Lt. Bourquin’s positive attitude, professionalism and team spirit make him an outstanding representative for NSP and NDCS. We commend his efforts and commitment to the Department.

Dr. Harbans Deol recently received an Excellence in Leadership Award from Governor Ricketts for his work during COVID-19.

Decisions and direction provided by Dr. Deol have enabled NDCS to appropriately manage the virus – keeping teammates, the inmate population and Nebraska citizens healthy and safe. In addition to his focus here, Dr. Deol has also been a voice in managing the coronavirus in correctional settings across the nation.

Congratulations to the newest NDCS Lean Six Sigma Green Belts! Governor Pete Ricketts presented Green Belts to Process Improvement Coordinators Shaun Grantski and Alyssa Payton during the State of Nebraska Center of Operational Excellence (COE) graduation ceremony today. Presentation of Green Belts is a historical tradition of the COE when one of its members achieves this rank. As Green Belts, they will use their Lean Six Sigma knowledge and skills to lead improvement and cost-savings projects within the agency. Well done, Shaun and Alyssa!Read more

Teammates in NDCS strive to bring their best to their jobs – everyday. Jaime Graham, Dylan Rasmussen and Rebecca Edwards were among those recognized for outstanding contributions to the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) during 2020.

Graham has been with the agency since 2019. As a licensed practical nurse, she’s known for being an excellent team player, one who has a calm and patient manner and is an excellent communicator with members of the inmate population. Graham was awarded with the Warden’s Proficiency Performance Award.
