Unit Case Manager Sara Scdoris began her career with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) seven years ago at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) as a caseworker. Scdoris held a degree in criminal justice and wanted to pursue work in that field, which led her to NDCS. Six years ago she moved over to the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L), and was recently promoted to unit case manager.

“Everything you do will affect someone else,” Scdoris quoted fellow coworker and friend Lorna Ellinger, as she advises other staff to be patient, learn how to listen and show respect.

The Employee Activity Committees (EAC) have been busy this month recognizing employees and all their hard work. The Lincoln Correctional Center and Diagnostic & Evaluation Center EAC braved a scorching hot day in the sun to serve up some delicious open-flamed burgers and brats, homemade bbq beans and coleslaw compliments of Lt. Schrotberger. Central Office EAC celebrated with a frozen treat day and approved jeans day. The Community Correction Center – Omaha EAC also celebrated with a potluck feast!Read more

The news of the violent murder of a beloved Tennessee Department of Correction administrator swept across the nation like wildfire and struck home to the thousands of correctional officers, unit case workers and teammates who work at prison facilities every day including here in Nebraska.

“It’s heart wrenching,” said Jill Ourada, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) safety coordinator and Honor Guard assistant team leader. “When I first heard what happened, I was mad. I might not know them in Tennessee, but I felt violated that someone murdered one of our own.”

The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) recognized a pair of food service employees this quarter for their exemplary efforts. Food Service Director Brandon Lee Morris was named the Supervisor of the Quarter, and Food Service Worker Tanja Bredwell was named Employee of the Quarter.

Morris’s hard work and dedication to NCCW shows week after week. He was promoted from food service manager to food service director at the beginning of the year. He and Bredwell, with some great help from security staff, continued to work together while the food service manager position was being filled. The two of them have worked...Read more

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) annual Partnership Award is presented to an outside organization that works with NDCS to provide meaningful program opportunities, with a focus on raising awareness and promoting the reintegration of offenders back into the community.

Director Frakes presented this year’s Partnership Award to President and CEO Barry Carlson of the MidAmerica Speakers Bureau. Upon receiving the award, Carlson told the audience, “Every speaker who has presented at a prison facility has said the same seven words upon leaving, ‘I can’t wait to go back again!’”

National speaker Baron Warren flew across the nation to come speak to the young adults living at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility in Omaha.

He talked about what being a man looks like in today's world and inspired this group to seek out responsibility.
