July 7, 2021 (Tecumseh, Neb.) – John Zalme #31008, age 74, died this morning at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). His sentence started January 27, 1977. Zalme was serving a sentence of 130 to 229 years for charges out of Lancaster County that included first degree assault, using a knife to commit a felony, assault with the intent to inflict bodily injury and stabbing with the intent to kill, wound or maim. July 6, 2021 (Tecumseh, Neb.) – An inmate assaulted a staff member at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) today, resulting in a serious injury*.

The staff member was making sure a door was secured when the inmate, who lives in a cell room nearby, punched the staff member repeatedly and used his knee to strike the staff member in the torso. June 28, 2021 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Scott R. Frakes, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) has declared a staffing emergency at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) and the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC), here in Lincoln. The process to implement a 12-hour operational pattern in those facilities will begin today.

June 23, 2021 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Ashley Bratic, (24), a corporal at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF) was arrested by the Nebraska State Patrol today for unauthorized communication with a prisoner (Neb. Rev. Stat. §83-417).

Bratic has been employed by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since June 1, 2020. This is the only facility where she has worked. Bratic resigned her position with the agency.

June 23, 2021 (Lincoln, Neb.) – An inmate who went missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L) on June 7, 2021 has been returned to the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). Mia Montes #392262 was booked into the Lancaster County jail on June 18, 2021, prior to her return to NDCS.

June 7, 2021 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Authorities have been notified about an inmate missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L). Mia Montes #392262 left her place of employment in the community today, but she did not return to the facility. The electronic monitoring device she was wearing had been removed and was later found on the side of the road.

June 6, 2021 (Lincoln, Neb.) – An inmate who was reported missing on June 3, 2021 has returned to the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). Ronald Sowards #88157 came back to the Community Correctional Center-Lincoln (CCC-L) on June 5, 2021.

Sowards started his sentence on August 20, 2018. He was sentenced to eight to 12 years for burglary in Lancaster County as well as burglary and possession/receiving a stolen firearm in Saunders County....Read more

June 3, 2021 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Authorities have been notified about an inmate missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L). Staff members noted that the electronic monitoring device worn by Ronald Sowards #88157 indicated no movement for several hours today while he was in the community. Attempts to locate him were not successful. Sowards later contacted the facility indicating that he was on his way back. He did not return.
