IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Case Worker Michael Galyen takes a radio call at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Galyen has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 2005. Twelve women graduated from the Prison Fellowship Academy (PFA) at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) on April 10. This was the first women's PFA graduation in the country. "You guys are truly making a difference now and you will continue to make a difference throughout your entire lives," Warden Denise Davidson told graduates at the ceremony. Audience members included PFA and NDCS executives, volunteers who helped teach PFA classes and prospective students for the next class. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Corporal Lucinda Holmes answers phone calls regarding questions about visiting hours at the Diagnostic Evaluation Center (DEC). Holmes has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) for 11 years. Her main job duties include receiving and processing all visiting forms for DEC, the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) and County Jail visits, processing visitors into the facility and supervising visits. “Working with the public, you get to see a different side of corrections,” Holmes said. “It is great to see these guys interact with their families and friends. “As soon as they get here, they should be thinking about a plan,” said Reentry Specialist Tony Britten. “We’re here to help the population develop those plans. It’s never too early to start thinking about your future.” The reentry team with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is helping incarcerated individuals prepare for their return to the community and providing opportunities for skill development during incarceration, both of which will help them realize a brighter future. The Community Justice Center (CJC) completed its 84th Restorative Justice “Victims Impact/Empathy/Life Skills Class” at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW) on April 4. Sixty-seven percent of participants said they gained insight into the effects their actions had on their victims and communities. “It helped me see how my behaviors affected everybody involved," one participant said.Read more

IN THE SPOTLIGHT:

Personnel Manager Michael Edison works alongside another team member at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP).

Edison has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) since 1998, when he started as an officer. Since then, he has promoted to corporal, became the disciplinary committee coordinator for NSP, and promoted to unit manager before accepting his current role as personnel manager.

Edison said he knew from the start that working for NDCS would be a career for him, as visions of being a warden someday danced in his head. He has not given up on that long ago...Read more
