NSP holds annual Toastmasters Banquet

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) Toastmasters held their annual banquet on Oct. 15.

Incarcerated individuals presented speeches to the club and district director. Presenting these speeches allows them to take the next step in their Pathway’s Program.

The men in this program have aspirations to become better, more competent leaders through communication. Vinson Champ fulfilled his final requirement for the Advanced Communicator-Gold Award, the highest award an individual may receive on the communication side of the Toastmasters educational ladder.

NCCW holds first Defy Graduation

The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW), held the first Defy Graduation with seventeen ladies graduating from the program. It was a great competition with amazing ideas and ‘pitches’ for their business ideas. Six months of dedication and hard work was put into the final result of strong confident ladies presenting a solid business plan (some of the ladies pitched their plan up to five times on the final day). The top five ladies were awarded prizes to help them start their own business upon release. New aquarium in NSP Visiting Room

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) has a new addition to the Visiting Room. There is now a seventy-five gallon aquarium for the enjoyment of all who enter the Visiting Room.Read more

New incentive program at DEC

The Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) has a new incentive program for inmates. The Housing Unit that has the least amount of guilty misconduct reports each month gets the chance to go over to the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) yard. The LCC big yard has more activities for inmates to participate in such as football and a track. Pictured is Housing Unit 3 who received the least amount of misconduct reports for July. Some of the incarcerated men organized a game of flag football while others stretched their legs on the track.Read more

WEC staff participate in Heritage Days Parade

Several staff from the McCook Work Ethic Camp (WEC) participated in the local Heritage Days Parade. Heritage Days is an annual celebration weekend full of activities including a parade down the main street of McCook. This is the third year WEC staff have worked together to represent the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) during this annual event.Read more

COCL Annual Banquet

The Circle of Concerned Lifers Organization (COCL) held its annual banquet on Monday, October 22, 2018. The COCL is committed to strengthen relationships in the prison populace by supporting educational activities, work projects, and/or other kinds of activities designed to promote respect, responsibility, and self-worth. The COCL recognized members who completed Restorative Justice facilitator training during the banquet. The key note speaker for the banquet was former Nebraska Governor Kay Orr.
