COCL Annual Banquet

COCL Annual Banquet

The Circle of Concerned Lifers Organization (COCL) held its annual banquet on Monday, October 22, 2018.  The COCL is committed to strengthen relationships in the prison populace by supporting educational activities, work projects, and/or other kinds of activities designed to promote respect, responsibility, and self-worth.  The COCL recognized members who completed Restorative Justice facilitator training during the banquet.  The key note speaker for the banquet was former Nebraska Governor Kay Orr.  In 1986, Kay Orr defeated former Lincoln Mayor Helen Boosalis in the first U.S. gubernatorial election in which both major party candidates were women.  Kay Orr was the first Republican woman to be elected governor in the United States.  She told the audience at the banquet that she never considered herself a politician rather, she was a public servant.  She recalled sitting on one side of President Ronald Reagan at a dinner in Washington D.C. while Prime Minister of the U.K., Margaret Thatcher sat on the other side of President Reagan.  She talked about what an honor it was to attend and be seated in that position.
