Over the years, new technologies in healthcare have transformed the medical industry, giving patients in Nebraska and across the world much more advanced care. Registered Nurse (RN) Alma Serrell, knows this all too well. She says she was the second nurse ever hired at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

“I started working at the old reformatory which is now the Lincoln Correctional Center,” said Serrell. “I’ve been with NDCS for 45 years.”

The garden at the Community Corrections Center – Omaha (CCCO) has been flourishing this year, thanks to good weather and the men living at CCCO who tend to it. They planted a wide variety of produce including: cucumbers, zucchini, squash, watermelon, cantaloupe, green beans, pole beans, radishes, six varieties of tomatoes, sweet to hot peppers, red, white and yellow onions, garlic, and cilantro. The garden is lined with marigolds to help keep out bugs and attract pollinators. National speaker Baron Warren visited four NDCS facilities last week including Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility, Nebraska State Penitentiary, Nebraska Correctional Center for Women and the Work Ethic Camp.

Juan Jimenez has been with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) for nearly 20 years. In that time he has held a wide variety of positions. He started at Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) as a Canteen Operator. Since then he saw many opportunities to advance and has been a Corrections Officer, Corporal, and Emergency Preparedness Response Specialist.
