Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) held its holiday party this week!

Enjoying good food with some of your best friends at work, and having fun put many smiles on our teammates' faces.

Each person at CSI does their part in giving incarcerated individuals an opportunity to learn and develop new job skills so they can be successful once back in the community.

They develop and build furniture, signs, clothing and lots more!

Several Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) teammates attended Creating an Engaging Workplace for Champions at Gallup Inc. last week in Omaha to learn more about the 12 elements of engagement, how to coach managers and teams, and best practices to weave engagement into our everyday processes.

When Sarah Bird was looking to move back to Nebraska in 2001, the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) in McCook offered her the opportunity she was looking for to move back to the state and community she loves. Initially, Bird hired on as a corporal, but moved over to probation and then juvenile probation for a while before returning to WEC in 2014 as a caseworker. She was promoted to unit case manager later that year.

Bird enjoys working as a case manager. “I appreciate being able to balance my family and career here,” said Bird. “The benefits, paid sick and vacation leave are a huge thing to me.”

The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) church was packed this weekend when 40 Plymouth choir members from the First Plymouth Congregational Church filled up the stage and held two different choir performances for the men at NSP.

The choir invited the men to sing holiday songs with them throughout the concert.

At the end of the performance, the audience gave the choir a standing ovation and thanked choir members for volunteering their time to come sing.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Director Scott R. Frakes made good on his promise this week to let whichever facility raised $1,000 the fastest, to shave off his facial hair in a Raise it to Shave it competition. This was one of the many ways the director encouraged NDCS teammates to raise money for United Way's charitable giving campaign. The Nebraska Correctional Center for Women won the competition. Director Frakes said his goodbyes to his mustache and goatee after having them for nearly 30 years. We asked if he plans on growing the facial hair back. He said he's starting tomorrow!

The Nebraska State Penitentiary celebrated the achievements of six men on November 25th at a commencement ceremony. Five men earned their State of Nebraska diplomas while one completed his high school diploma at the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility.

Former Doane University President Fred Brown, spoke to the graduates and guests about the importance of this milestone, the challenges they’ve overcome, and lessons they’ve learned along the way about perseverance.
