Chances are good you have crossed paths with Staff Assistant Annette Powers. Powers greets most new hires on day one to issue their uniforms.

Powers was recently recognized for achieving 40 years of service to the State of Nebraska. She started her state career with the State College Board in 1979, moved to the Department of Administrative Services Division of Communications in 1988, and then to Surplus Property in 1991. All her various roles helped prepare her for her final move to NDCS Purchasing in 2006.

A group of incarcerated men at the Nebraska State Penitentiary has transformed one of the housing units with beautiful, hand-painted murals.

The six-mural project began in December 2017, after the previous unit manager and lead porter came up with the idea to make their housing unit less dreary.

Presently, two murals are finished with three others nearing completion.

The murals are designed and painted by the incarcerated individuals and are subject to pre-approval from Warden Michele Capps.

Representatives from several agencies came together at the SERVES Team meeting on March 19, 2019, for a panel discussion. The Nebraska Army National Guard Victim Advocate Coordinator and Peer Victim Advocate, the Lincoln Police Department Victim Witness Unit Director, and a Voices of Hope Sexual Assault Services Coordinator discussed a variety of topics.

Through the panel’s many years of expertise assisting victims of crime they shared tips on what has and hasn’t worked, challenges they have faced, and how they have worked to reduce the stigma associated with handling traumatic events.

Approximately 70 visitors got an inside look at the new Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L) Women’s Housing Unit Friday, March 29th. Staff and their families had the unique opportunity to the tour the modern, state-of-the-art facility.

The event was extremely successful in showcasing not only the facility, but giving families a chance to visit staffs’ workplace and being able to envision their day-to-day duties. It also helped staff visualize what it will look like once they make the final move, and emphasizing the reality that they were one step closer to being fully operational.

Tecumseh State Correctional Institution came together to save lives this past Tuesday.

A blood drive through the American Red Cross was held at TSCI on April 2, 2019 to collect life-saving units of blood.

The blood drive was open to the TSCI staff as well as the public.

There were 16 donors that came out to donate and 14 life-saving units were collected.

For every life-saving unit that is collected, up to 3 lives are saved.

The TSCI team helped save up to 42 lives this week.

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services will be sponsoring its third annual golf tournament to raise money for the Correctional Peace Officers Foundation (CPOF).

CPOF is a national nonprofit organization that aids correctional staff members in times of need as well as supports the families of Correctional Officers who lose their lives in the pursuit of their careers.

Recently, CPOF has aided NDCS employees who were affected by the state-wide flooding.

Any Correctional employees who have been affected by the flooding can fill out an application to request aid from CPOF.

Family, friends, and volunteers gathered at the Lincoln Correctional Center on February 26 for its second annual Recognition Ceremony. Twenty-three incarcerated individuals were recognized for successfully completing programming within the last year.

Case Manager Brandon Tan and participant Scott McNeil shared inspirational, heartfelt speeches.

The food service team provided a celebratory meal consisting of homemade desserts, sandwiches, and salads.Read more
