NSP inmate dies at hospital

December 27, 2019 (Lincoln, NE) – Mark Nielson #83595, age 64, died at 2:30 p.m. today at Bryan Medical Center-West in Lincoln. He was incarcerated at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. Nielson’s sentence began on February 22, 2016. He was serving an 8- to 10-year sentence out of Douglas County for the distribution, manufacture and possession of methamphetamine, with the intent to deliver.

Disturbance results in damage to DEC housing unit

December 25, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb.) – A disturbance inside a housing unit resulted in property damage, but no injuries at the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) on December 24, 2019. The incident started before 7:00 p.m., causing the facility to be placed on lockdown* status, while the investigation proceeded into those responsible for causing the incident.

Inmate death at the Nebraska State Penitentiary

December 11, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Serviano Ruiz #89846, age 77, died shortly after 5:00 a.m. today at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. His sentence started on July 3, 2019. Ruiz was serving a two year sentence out of Lancaster County for abuse of a vulnerable adult.

Six men at NDCS facility test positive for salmonella

December 11, 2019 (Lincoln, NEB.) – Testing has revealed that six men incarcerated at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC) became infected with salmonella, on or around November 22, 2019. Others also became sick around the same time period with similar symptoms, but were not tested. All are recovering from their symptoms.

New warden appointed at NCYF

December 9, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Today, Chief of Operations, Diane Sabatka-Rine announced the appointment of Loretta Wells as the new warden for the Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility (NCYF). Wells will assume her new duties on December 23, 2019.

Inmate missing from community correctional facility

December 5, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb.) -- Authorities have been notified about an inmate missing from the Community Corrections Center-Omaha (CCC-O). Shelton Fils #76680 left the facility at around 6:00 p.m. on December 4, 2019. He removed the electronic monitoring device he was wearing, which was recovered in Carter Lake, IA.
