Class 123: Week 5

Recruits in Class 123 traded in their uniforms for physical training attire and spent time this week learning a variety of defense skills. After training specialists demonstrated these, class members partnered up to practice and reinforce what they learned. Repetition is key to mastering the skills and these recruits were committed to thoroughly learning and ultimately passing their skills test.

Accepting Applications: Vocational and Life Skills (VLS) partners

Skills training, job seeking, housing, community support….these are resources that set individuals up for success as they reenter the community. Our Vocational and Life Skills (VLS) partners play an important role in this work. In fact, more than 9,400 individuals have received reentry support through the VLS program since 2015!

The next grant cycle will begin in July, and applications are now available. NDCS is on the road! Last week Training Specialist (TS) Miller from the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) traveled to Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, for their spring career fair. TS Miller talked with students about the various career paths in corrections: criminal justice, culinary arts, healthcare, psychology and so much more.

Multiple NDCS facilities receive ACA re-accreditation

For more than 150 years, the American Correctional Association (ACA) has championed the cause of corrections and correctional effectiveness. At NDCS we’re proud to partner in this important work.

NDCS representatives from multiple facilities accepted re-accreditation certificates at the ACA Winter Conference. The accreditation includes a series of reviews, evaluations, audits and hearings – all aimed to verify that agencies and facilities comply with ACA’s national standards. Class 123: Week 4

Class 123 is completing week four of pre-service training, and as we follow along with this group it seems fitting to give a shout out to the training specialists at the Staff Training Academy (STA) and all the teammates who support this important work.

STA is the place where new teammates learn how to be effective corrections professionals – from classroom learning, hands-on skills and the example their training instructors set. Many careers and long-lasting friendships have begun here. No matter the role or the facility, STA has touched every NDCS teammate in some way! #Class123

Reentry Roundtable

Transitional living provides a supportive environment where individuals can concentrate on the things that will ultimately lead to becoming self-sufficient – and it can be the key to success for many men and women who are reentering the community.

This month, the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) invited transitional living organizations from across Nebraska to the facility for a reentry roundtable event. Men at OCC met with these organizations to learn about resources available to them. It was fantastic to see so many individuals excited about creating a plan that will lead to their future success!

TSCI Bake Sale Supports EAC

Teammates at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) proved that they have some serious baking skills! The Valentine’s Day bake sale brought together staff throughout the facility – both to contribute sweet treats and to take some home. To top it off, proceeds supported the TSCI Employee Activity Committee and an upcoming teammate appreciation barbecue they are planning. Nice work, TSCI!Read more

At NDCS, we’re always looking for ways to recognize team members who go the extra mile, and Unit Caseworker Nathan Abbott is one of those teammates!

Nathan is a positive role model at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC) and respected among his peers for the professionalism he brings to the job every day. No matter what the day holds, he is highly adaptable and goes above and beyond to support the agency’s mission. His efforts don’t go unnoticed – he was recently awarded OCC Teammate of the Quarter.
