TSCI team members pull together to save a life

On Nov. 20th around 9 a.m., team members at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) made an Emergency Response Team (ERT) call for a “staff member down.” Team members responded to the area where Cornhusker State Industries (CSI) team member Rolande (Rolly) Nielsen Jr. had collapsed while escorting a CSI truck.
When team members arrived on scene and assessed Nielsen, he had no pulse and was not breathing. They called 911, began CPR immediately and utilized an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). TSCI’s physician, Dr. Kasselman, rushed to the scene to assist, continue CPR and facilitate the AED.
Once Johnson County emergency responders arrived at TSCI, Nielsen was transported and Dr. Kasselman accompanied him to Johnson County Hospital (JCH). From JCH, Nielsen was life-flighted to Bryan East Hospital where it was determined his heart had stopped beating.
Nielsen is now recuperating at home and indicated he is anxious to return to work.
Emergency medical staff later reported that if it hadn’t been for Dr. Kasselman and the quick response by TSCI team members, the outcome could have been very different.
“This was yet another incident in which the incredible team at TSCI pulled together, and in this case, saved a life,” TSCI Warden Brad Hansen said.
