Education is vital to improving lives and reducing recidivism, making teachers an invaluable resource at NDCS. As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, we thank all of our educators who contribute to bettering those in our care at NDCS.

“I think what makes us such a great team is we all have our own perspective and bring that to the table, which helps students be exposed to different perspectives,” said NDCS Principal Susan Harder. “We need a diverse group of educators to meet the needs of all students and I couldn’t ask for a better team.”

The work of the NDCS education team spans nine facilities and includes adult basic education, adult secondary education, English as a Second Language, career readiness and an accredited high school. Career preparedness, including a two-year HVAC program and a constant eye on applicable certifications, help set up individuals for successful employment upon release.

Since July 2021, more than 60 students have completed GED testing for a high school equivalency diploma and 16 students have earned diplomas from the NCYF Community High School.

“You never know how many teachers touched a person’s life along the way,” said Harder. “All of us are on the same train going the same direction and because of that we’re able to keep the momentum going.”

Before joining the department 14 years ago, Harder had the opportunity to collaborate with a NDCS educator and was inspired by her passion for working with the incarcerated population.

“There’s a new challenge every day,” said Harder. “It keeps me constantly thinking and working to make sure students and teachers have what they need.”
