NDCS Team Member Spotlight

This week we are highlighting our NDCS Corrections Leadership Scholarship Program students. While studying criminal justice at Peru State College, these students are gaining valuable hands-on experience to become the corrections leaders of tomorrow.

With a desire to help others, Cherise Womelsdorf—a native of Grant, Nebraska—has had a longtime interest in probation.

“I am an oldest child, a fixer, and even at a young age helping people work through their issues has been my thing,” said Womelscorf.

Attending Peru State College, Womelscorf was presented with a great opportunity to grow her passion for learning and inspire her two daughters. She is a part of the Corrections Leadership Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to Peru State criminal justice students who are completing a degree while working at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) during the school year and summer. The goal is to develop students into leaders and employees of NDCS.

“I always thought that corrections would be part of my process for the experience,” said Womelscorf. “As a single mother, I wasn’t sure how I was going to balance children, being a full-time student and having a full-time commitment to the department. The program is practical for me.”

Womelsdorf is looking forward to the opportunity of working at TSCI.
