April 15, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb) – Whitney Hopkins (58), #88807, died shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2019 at Bryan Medical Center -- West. Hopkins was assigned to the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) and was moved to the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center (DEC) on April 10. He was taken by state vehicle to the hospital this morning due to a medical issue.
Hopkins was serving a nine year sentence for charges in Gage County. He was convicted of possession and distribution of a controlled substance, child abuse and tampering with a witness.
While the cause of death has not been determined, Hopkins was being treated for a medical condition. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
