Inmate death at the Nebraska State Penitentiary

September 25, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb.) – Jay Witt #81156, age 53, died today at 4:16 p.m. at the Nebraska State Penitentiary. His sentence began on October 22, 2014. Witt was serving a 30- to 40-year sentence stemming from charges out of Douglas County including: manslaughter, use of a deadly weapon and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person.

While the cause of death has not been determined, Witt was being treated for a medical condition. As is the case whenever an inmate dies in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
