Food Service Specialist finds voice at NDCS

There is something special about working as a team to provide food for others. Food Service Specialist Yeackley knows this feeling. She is a food service specialist at the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS).

Before starting her career in corrections, Yeackley opened fast food restaurants across the country. She was looking for a job with less travel. She found it at NDCS. What she was surprised to find, was the chance to become a true leader. "I've found my voice here. I have more confidence in leading people and I've learned how to direct people."

Yeackley admits she was a little nervous to work at a correctional facility. But she said now that she is here, it is not as daunting as it once seemed. "My teammates are there for me," she said. "I'm proud to say I'm more assertive now. I like it!"

The food service specialist coordinates, trains and manages those in the correctional facilities who prepare and serve food. They assist in teaching new cooking skills along with sanitation, safety and food storage requirements.

Yeackley said she has enhanced her communication skills and not only uses these skills at work, but also in her personal life. "My confidence sticks with me no matter where I am," she said. "The training we had at the Staff Training Academy also really added to my confidence level to be successful at NDCS."
