Dawn-Renee Smith

Communications Director

Dawn-Renee Smith was appointed communications director in September 2016. Smith has worked in the human services field for more than 20 years, providing direct care to children in foster care, developing fiscal and operational policy within behavioral health systems and grant writing and fundraising for community action.

Smith began her career with NDCS in 2005 as a caseworker at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI). She served as the litigation and public information officer at TSCI and then as the agency’s legislative and public information coordinator beginning in 2009. In 2014, Smith took on the newly-created role of reentry administrator where she developed a team to implement reentry services and vocational and life skills training throughout 10 correctional facilities and in the community.

Today, Smith is back in her communications role, leading a small team to direct the agency’s communication and increase public perception. “I am committed to the mission of this agency,” Smith said. “First-rate internal and external communication enhances our ability to keep people safe.”

Smith earned a Bachelor of Science from Texas Tech University.
