Medical Director


Dr. Harbans Deol was appointed medical director in January of 2017. He oversees the Health Services division, which includes medical, dental, psychiatry and behavioral health.

Dr. Deol worked for the Iowa Department of Corrections for more than 12 years as the Health Services Administrator overseeing the medical, mental health, dental and pharmaceutical departments. Dr. Deol was in private practice for over 15 years prior to joining the Iowa DOC. He has conducted research in HCV and HIV using molecular biology techniques as a research scientist in a pharmaceutical company. He has numerous patents and publications in the scientific arena. He served as Chief of Staff at the hospital and as Medical Director for nursing homes.

Dr. Deol earned a Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology from New York University, and a D.O. from Des Moines University, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at the Norwalk Hospital, an affiliate of Yale University.

He is a member of the Coalition of Correctional Health Authorities (CCHA) and serves as Chairman of the Health Committee of the American Correctional Association (ACA). He is also the Chairman of the Clinical Updates Committee for ACA.
