Volunteer Services


The Department encourages citizen involvement and volunteer programs in all of its correctional institutions and program areas. Volunteers generate a variety of services for inmates and parolees. Below are some examples of volunteer opportunities:

  • Clubs
  • Community Sponsors for inmate passes and furloughs
  • Education
  • Recreation
  • Religion
  • Self-Betterment Activities (AA, NA, Toastmasters, etc.)
  • Other (Ideas are continually evaluated to identify programming needs)

Volunteers can also develop skills and knowledge for utilization in their careers through the required volunteer training. This comprehensive training incorporates an overview of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services philosophy and operation, familiarization to the institution/program where the volunteer will be working, overview of inmate/parolee characteristics and background, guidelines for working with inmates/parolees, security, emergency situations, contraband, ethics, sexual harassment policy, statutory provision regarding sexual conduct with inmates/paroles and victim services.
