The Department of Correctional Services has been involved in the Accreditation process since 1979. The Department has all of its institutions, programs and central administration accredited. After initial accreditation, institutions and programs are audited every three years in an effort to maintain accreditation. Accreditation offers the opportunity to evaluate the Department's operations against national standards, remedy deficiencies, and upgrade the quality of correctional programs and services. Benefits of the accreditation process include improved management and conditions of confinement and improved staff training and development. Accreditation also increases accountability and enhances public credibility for administrative and line staff. The process provides for a safer and more humane environment for personnel and offenders. This process has assisted the Department by establishing criteria for upgrading programs, personnel and physical plants on a continuing basis.
Nebraska is one state of a select few that have been presented the Eagle Award for having the entire correctional systems accredited through the American Correctional Association. For Nebraska this included Performance-Based Standards for Adult Community Residential Services, Adult Correctional Institutions, Adult Probation and Parole Field Services, Performance-Based Standards for Correctional Industries, Standards for Correctional Training Academies and Administration of Correctional Agencies.
